Two years after my husband divorced me and married my best friend, I was hiding

The chill of the February night was nothing compared to the icy shiver that swept through me at Ernesto’s words. Destroy his own son? My ex-husband, Javier, the man who had once been my entire world? The same man who had left me shattered and alone, barely clinging to sanity under the indifferent arch of a bridge? Ernesto’s proposal hung in the air, heavier than the fog that wrapped the city in its cold embrace.

I stared at him, trying to assess the truth behind his weary eyes. This was a man who had once embodied power and control, but now seemed burdened by shadows that stretched longer than those cast by the streetlights. I wondered what had brought him to this pivotal moment, what could possibly drive a father to turn against his own flesh and blood.

“Why?” I finally asked, my voice hoarse from disuse and disbelief.

Ernesto sighed, a sound laden with secrets and sorrow. “Javier is not the man you once knew. He has become…reckless. Dangerous. He’s involved with people who would stop at nothing to protect their interests. People who pose a threat not only to my business but to the family itself. And Lucía…” he paused, as if weighing his next words carefully. “Lucía is in over her head.”

The mention of Lucía, my former best friend turned betrayer, twisted a knife in my chest. Her betrayal had been a bitter pill to swallow, and yet there was a part of me that still felt a flicker of concern. Whatever tangled web Javier had spun, it seemed she was trapped in it, too.

“Why me?” I asked, my skepticism still intact. “I’m just a ghost to them. A memory they’ve buried.”

“Precisely,” Ernesto replied, his gaze never wavering. “You’re invisible in their world. Someone who can move unseen. And you have a personal stake in this. It’s a chance for redemption, María. For both of us.”

Redemption. The word echoed in my mind, a tantalizing promise of reclaiming the life that had slipped through my fingers. Yet it was also a dangerous lure, especially when the stakes involved dismantling the very foundation of Javier’s empire—a task that seemed impossible, even under the guise of a phantom.

“Suppose I agree,” I said carefully. “What happens then?”

Ernesto’s face softened slightly, as if he had anticipated my question. “We begin to gather information. Carefully, discreetly. We need proof of his dealings, evidence that even the most powerful allies cannot ignore. But you must be sure, María. This path is fraught with risk.”

I hesitated, the weight of his request pressing heavily on my shoulders. Could I really do this? Could I risk losing what little I had left for a chance at vengeance—and perhaps salvation?

Yet, beneath the layers of fear and doubt, a spark kindled to life. It was a flame fed by the embers of betrayal, loss, and the faint hope that maybe, just maybe, I could forge a new destiny from the ashes.

Finally, I nodded, my decision made. “Alright, Ernesto. I’ll help you. But I want something in return.”

“Name it,” he said, his voice filled with a mixture of relief and steel.

“I want my life back,” I said simply. “A chance to start anew, free from the ghosts of the past.”

Ernesto nodded, his expression solemn. “That, María, is a promise I intend to keep.”

With that, I climbed into the SUV, leaving behind the bridge and the ghost of the person I had once been. As the engine roared to life, I glanced at Ernesto, and together we drove into the night, bound by a shared purpose and an uncertain future. READ MORE BELOOW
