The clock on the wall of the Huntsville Unit read six in the morning, and Daniel Foster had stopped counting the days. He had counted them for five years. Five years of concrete and fluorescent light, of sleepless nights staring at a ceiling that never changed, of shouting his innocence into the bureaucratic indifference of a system that had already made up its mind. He had filed appeals and written letters and sat across thick glass partitions from attorneys who had the tired, careful look of people who believed him but could not prove it. He sat on the edge of his bunk in the orange jumpsuit that had replaced his identity five years ago and tried to hold the image of his daughter in his mind. Emily was eight now.
