What had begun as a casual inquiry quickly became something far more serious.

She clarified her statement with precision, explaining that the trust fund had been established years earlier by Maggie’s late grandfather, with the explicit intention of securing Maggie’s future and providing her with financial independence upon reaching adulthood. The terms had been clear, the timeline defined, and the responsibility of managing the funds entrusted to Maggie’s parents until she turned twenty-one.

As she spoke, Maggie felt a growing sense of disbelief and betrayal, each word adding another layer to a reality she had never been allowed to see. She turned once again to her parents, searching their faces for some form of denial or explanation that could make sense of the situation, but what she found instead was hesitation—an inability to meet her gaze, an unwillingness to speak plainly.
