One quiet evening, Emma went out to throw away the trash and noticed an old sofa beside the dumpsters. Worn and faded, it seemed past its prime, yet the frame looked solid. She had seen two men unload it from a small truck moments earlier, then drive off without a backward glance. Something about the hurried abandonment struck her as odd. After a pause, she decided it was worth saving and, with effort, dragged it into their apartment.

Daniel stared at it in disbelief. “Are we collecting furniture from the street now?” he asked. Emma, calm and practical, pointed out the sturdy frame and envisioned the potential with new upholstery. Amused despite himself, Daniel agreed to help, joking that if cockroaches crawled out, the sofa was going straight back outside. Together, they carried it into the living room, stripped the old fabric, and prepared fresh material.

As Daniel removed the seat cushion, he suddenly froze. “Emma… come here. Quickly.” Peeling back the stuffing revealed tightly wrapped packages hidden inside. Another, and another—hundreds of neatly stacked bundles of hundred-dollar bills spilled onto the floor. Silence filled the room as they stared at the unexpected fortune, their minds racing to process the impossible discovery.

Emma whispered, “Where did this come from?” Daniel swallowed hard, realizing the implications. “If it was thrown away, whoever dumped it probably didn’t know about the money… or maybe they did.” The unspoken word “crime” lingered between them, and the room felt smaller, heavier. On the floor lay something that could either transform their lives—or destroy them.
