I never told my in-laws’ family I owned a five-billion-dollar empire. To them, I was

Elena allowed herself a small, knowing smile. “No, David. I’ll do something better. I’ll talk to myself.” With a steady hand, she tapped on her phone screen and connected her call to the conference room of Nova Group’s Board of Directors.

“Hello, this is Elena Roberts, Chairman of Nova Group,” she announced, her voice echoing into the stunned silence of the dining room. “I’m calling to announce a personnel change. Effective immediately, David Roberts’ employment is terminated.”

The smirk evaporated from David’s face, replaced by a look of shock and horror. Clara’s wine glass slipped from her fingers, shattering on the polished wood floor. Brenda’s mouth opened and closed like a fish gasping for air.

“Elena,” Mark’s voice was a soft whisper, as if he was seeing his wife for the first time. He had known she was more than she appeared, but this revelation was beyond his imagination.

Elena turned to him, her expression softening for a moment. “I’m sorry, Mark, but enough is enough. Our daughter deserves better than this.”

There was a flurry of movement as the family members scrambled to process what had just unfolded. David was protesting, stammering about the injustice, the mistake that must have been made. The room buzzed with panic and confusion, but Elena remained a pillar of calm.

“You can’t do this!” Brenda shouted, her voice trembling with rage. “This is our family!”

Elena stood, lifting Lily into her arms, feeling the weight of the past years lift from her shoulders. “Family doesn’t do what you just did,” she replied simply.

Clara, who had been silent up until now, found her voice. “You think you’re so much better than us just because you have money? You’re still just an outsider, a wannabe.”

Elena chuckled, a sound that seemed to chill the air. “It’s not just about money, Clara. It’s about respect, about treating people with dignity. And it’s about knowing when enough is enough.”

With that, Elena turned and walked out of the dining room, her daughter nestled against her shoulder. She felt Mark fall into step beside her, his hand gently touching her back.

As they stepped out into the crisp night air, leaving the chaos behind, Elena breathed deeply, feeling the cold bite of winter refresh her spirit.

“Lily, I think it’s time for a new dress,” she said softly, as her daughter’s tears finally began to dry. “How about something custom-made from the finest designer?”

Lily’s eyes lit up, and she wrapped her arms around Elena’s neck. “Thank you, Mommy.”
