Elena’s fingers danced across her phone screen, her expression unchanged by David’s dismissive sneer. She opened her email app, tapping a few keys with precision before turning the screen toward him. The room fell silent, eyes widening with confusion and disbelief.
The email was addressed to the entire board of directors at Nova Group, subject line: “Immediate Dismissal of David Roberts.” Attached were detailed accounts of financial discrepancies and unethical practices David had thought were well-hidden.
“You have been embezzling funds, David,” Elena continued, her voice steady but venomous. “And as the Chairman of Nova Group, I have the authority to terminate your employment effective immediately.”
The color drained from David’s face. The once smug expression melted into one of horror and desperation. “You… You’re lying! This is some sort of sick joke! Mark, tell her!” He looked wildly at his brother, but Mark was as stunned as everyone else.
Brenda, who had been smugly silent until now, rushed to her son’s defense. “This is preposterous! Do you think you can just come into our home and spew such lies? My husband will have the final say!”
Elena didn’t flinch. “Your husband,” she said evenly, “is enjoying a comfortable retirement in the same manner that I allowed Mark to step away from the corporate world to pursue his own dreams. I am the reason your family enjoys its current standing, and I am the backbone of Nova Group.”
Clara, who had remained seated, her wine glass now empty, attempted to regain her composure. “You won’t get away with this,” she spat. “We’ll take this to court!”
Elena simply shook her head. “Please do. The law firm on retainer with Nova Group is the best in the country. But then again, you probably already know that, considering they’ve handled all your family’s affairs.”
A moment of stunned silence enveloped the room. It was clear that Elena’s revelation had not only shattered their assumptions but completely dismantled the power dynamic they had always wielded over her.
Mark stood up, his voice breaking the tension. “Elena, why didn’t you tell me?” His eyes were filled with a mix of admiration and regret.
“I wanted you to have your family back without the shadow of my success over you,” Elena replied, softer now, her gaze meeting his with love and sincerity. “But I won’t let anyone hurt Lily. Not even for you.”
The room was still as Elena picked up Lily, who had stopped crying and was looking at her mother with a newfound sense of awe. Elena kissed the top of her daughter’s head.
