Right after I gave birth, my daughter told me to hide under the hospital bed…

The shoes belonged to Dr. Hargrove, the doctor with the silver watch. He had been present throughout my labor, but now, standing near the bed, his presence felt ominous. I could see the polished leather of his shoes and hear the soft rustle of his coat as he moved.

“Everything is in place,” Dr. Hargrove said quietly, addressing someone who had entered behind him. I recognized the voice—Linda. My heart skipped a beat.

“Good,” Linda replied, her tone cold and business-like. “I want her out of the picture by the end of the day. Mark needs to focus on his career, and this new child… it’s a distraction.”

I clamped a hand over my mouth to suppress the gasp threatening to escape. They were discussing me as if I were a mere inconvenience, something to be sorted out and disposed of. My mind raced, piecing together the nightmare that was unraveling around me.

Linda continued, “I have the papers here. We just need her signature. Under sedation, it should be easy enough to forge if necessary.”

Dr. Hargrove hesitated. “Are you sure about this, Linda? It’s quite risky.”

“Don’t get cold feet now,” Linda snapped. “We’ve come too far. She’s weak and alone. Now is the time.”

Their conversation droned on, but panic clouded my senses. Emily had saved me, given me precious moments to process this betrayal. But what now? I couldn’t stay hidden forever. I needed to get out, find Mark, and protect my children.

As their shadows flickered across the room, I caught sight of Emily. She was sitting on the corner chair, her small frame rigid with fear, eyes fixed on the floor. I had to be strong for her.

A sudden realization hit me—my phone. It was in the side drawer of the hospital bed. If I could reach it, I could call Mark, alert the authorities. But any movement risked drawing attention.

I took a deep breath, steadying myself. The sound of papers shuffling and hushed plotting continued above, but I forced myself to move. Inch by inch, I stretched my arm towards the drawer handle, straining against the pain and my own rising fear.

Just as my fingers brushed the cool metal, Emily’s voice rang out. “Grandma, can I have some water?”

Linda paused. “Of course, darling. Doctor, why don’t you fetch some?”

I seized the opportunity. As Dr. Hargrove stepped out, I whispered Emily’s name. Her eyes darted towards mine beneath the bed, and I mouthed the word “phone.” Understanding flickered in her gaze, and she slid off the chair, pretending to adjust her shoelace near the drawer.

In a swift, practiced motion that belied her young age, she slipped the phone from the drawer and nudged it towards me with her foot.

My heart soared with gratitude, but there was no time to waste. With trembling hands, I dialed Mark’s number, praying he would answer swiftly.
