Thieves are using a simple tactic called the plastic bottle trick to steal cars and personal belongings. They wedge a plastic bottle between the front passenger-side tire and the wheel well of a parked vehicle.
When the driver starts moving, the bottle crushes against the tire and makes a loud popping sound. Thinking something is wrong with their car, most drivers pull over to investigate the noise.
Drivers often step out in a hurry, leaving the engine running or the doors unlocked. The thief then jumps into the idling car and drives off, or quickly steals valuables left inside the cabin.
To protect yourself, check around your tires before getting into your vehicle. If you ever need to step out to check an unusual noise, turn off the engine, take your keys, and lock the doors.
