A dark, velvety patch on the skin that won’t scrub away is often acanthosis nigricans, a condition marked by thickened, hyperpigmented areas of skin. Typically appearing in body folds like the neck, armpits, or groin, these patches are not dirt, but a physical indicator of an underlying health factor.
Most commonly, acanthosis nigricans is triggered by insulin resistance, prediabetes, or type 2 diabetes. High levels of circulating insulin stimulate rapid skin cell reproduction, causing the skin to darken and take on a soft, velvety texture. Hormonal imbalances, certain medications, and genetic factors can also cause these changes.
Because acanthosis nigricans is a symptom rather than an independent disease, topical scrubbing will not remove it. Managing the underlying root cause through medical guidance, diet, exercise,
and lifestyle adjustments is necessary to help the skin gradually lighten and return to normal over time.
