Stepmom Demands a Gluten-Free Wedding Menu..

Jennifer, 28, and her fiancé spent more than a year planning their dream wedding, including hiring a chef to create a special menu. Her stepmother, who was diagnosed with celiac disease last year, demanded that the entire reception be gluten-free. Jennifer refused, explaining that gluten-free meals would be provided for her stepmother and any other guests with dietary restrictions, but the full menu would remain unchanged.

The disagreement escalated when her stepmother accused Jennifer of being ableist and claimed she was being treated like an outsider in the family. She also pressured Jennifer’s father to take her side, insisting that serving any gluten-containing food made her feel excluded from the celebration.

At Jennifer’s bridal shower, her stepmother brought homemade gluten-free cookies that turned out to be packed with excessive cayenne pepper, leaving guests coughing and rushing for water. She later admitted the cookies were meant to show Jennifer “what it’s like to have nothing to eat at an event,” making the incident feel more like a deliberate stunt than a kind gesture.

Now, Jennifer’s stepmother is threatening to skip the wedding unless the entire menu is changed to gluten-free. Jennifer believes providing safe gluten-free options is a reasonable accommodation but wonders if she’s wrong for refusing to redesign the entire reception around one guest’s demands.
