A Simple and Affordable DIY Jewelry Cleaner You Can Make at Home

Keeping your jewelry looking clean and bright doesn’t have to involve costly products or professional cleaning services. Over time, exposure to air, moisture, and everyday wear can cause certain metals to lose their shine and appear dull. This is especially common with silver and similar materials, which naturally develop a darker surface layer as they react with their environment. The good news is that restoring sparkle can be simple, affordable, and easy to do at home using items most people already have in their kitchen.

This gentle home method uses three basic ingredients: baking soda, salt, and mild liquid dish soap. Begin by heating one cup of water until it is very hot but not boiling. Add one tablespoon of baking soda, one tablespoon of salt, and a small squirt of dish soap, stirring until everything dissolves. Line a heat-safe bowl with aluminum foil, placing the shiny side facing upward. Carefully pour the hot solution into the bowl, then place your tarnished jewelry into the liquid so each piece rests on the foil and is fully covered.

After a few minutes, you may notice the metal starting to look cleaner and brighter. This happens because the combination of the foil and the solution creates a gentle reaction that helps loosen surface discoloration without the need for heavy scrubbing. Let the jewelry soak for about five to ten minutes, checking occasionally to see how it looks. For pieces with detailed designs or small crevices, you can lightly brush them afterward with a soft toothbrush if needed.

Once the soaking process is complete, remove each piece carefully and rinse it under cool running water to wash away any remaining residue. Pat everything dry with a soft, lint-free cloth to avoid water spots. This method works well for sterling silver, silver-plated items, gold-filled pieces, brass, and similar metals. However, it’s best to avoid using this technique on delicate stones, pearls, or antique jewelry without first checking care recommendations. With just a few simple steps, you can keep your favorite pieces looking fresh and well cared for — all without spending much money or time.READ MORE STORIES BELOW
