The Gift I Never Understood…

For my wedding, my sister gave me a simple gift card. I thought it was a cheap and thoughtless present, but I thanked her anyway and tried not to dwell on it. Sadly, she passed away later that winter, leaving our family heartbroken.

After her funeral, I was told she had left me an envelope. When I opened it, it was empty, and I felt disappointed and confused. I wondered if the gift card had truly been all she wanted to give me.

A few days later, my mother called and urgently asked me to bring the envelope back. When I arrived, I found her in tears. She had discovered a stack of folded papers that had been misplaced in another envelope. They revealed that my sister had been secretly saving money for an entire year to help me make a down payment on my first home.

In that moment, I realized how wrong I had been about her. What I had mistaken for cheapness was actually quiet generosity and love. The money had been intended as a surprise birthday gift, and today, every time I look at my home, I remember my sister’s kindness and the incredible gift she left behind.
