Hero bystander who risked own life to disarm Bondi Beach gunman is identified

A Sydney father-of-two, Ahmed al Ahmed, is being hailed as a hero after confronting a gunman during a mass shooting at Bondi Beach. The 43-year-old fruit shop owner from Sutherland had no prior firearms experience but risked his life to stop the attack, sustaining two gunshot wounds in the process. He is currently recovering in hospital after surgery.

Footage shows Ahmed crouched behind a car as gunfire erupted, then sprinting across the parking lot to tackle the shooter in a headlock. The five-second struggle ended with Ahmed disarming the attacker and securing the weapon, preventing further immediate harm. Despite his injuries, he managed to place the gun safely against a tree while bystanders helped him.

The shooting occurred during a Jewish celebration called Chanukah By The Sea, coinciding with the busy Bondi Christmas markets. Authorities reported 12 deaths, including one of the gunmen, and 29 people injured and hospitalized, marking it a devastating, targeted attack.
