She complimented my daughter\u2019s vintage dress with a smile that didn\u2019t quite hide the insult beneath it.<\/p>\n
\u201cVery\u2026 quaint,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cOh sweetheart,\u201d she said loudly enough for nearby guests to hear. \u201cThose are foie gras and caviar. They might be a little advanced for you.\u201d<\/p>\n
Then she suggested the kitchen prepare something \u201csimpler\u201d\u2014maybe spaghetti or fried chicken.<\/p>\n
My son\u2019s face fell.<\/p>\n
I tried to stay calm.<\/p>\n
But things only got worse.<\/p>\n
Ten minutes later, Willa came back from the restroom with red eyes.<\/p>\n
A group of girls had mocked her shoes, calling them \u201cpoor-people shoes.\u201d<\/p>\n
