I\u2019ve been a flight attendant for years, and very little surprises me anymore. But one flight changed me forever. During my cabin rounds, I noticed a little boy, no older than five, sitting quietly beside a woman. His hands were shaking, and his eyes were filled with fear. Then he made a small hand gesture that I immediately recognized\u2014the silent sign for \u201chelp.\u201d<\/p>\n
I knelt beside him and gently asked if he was okay. His lip trembled as he whispered, \u201cIt\u2019s not my mom. I lost my mom.\u201d Before I could respond, the woman beside him woke up and quickly explained through tears that she was his aunt. The boy\u2019s mother had died from cancer only a few weeks earlier, and he still couldn\u2019t understand why she wasn\u2019t coming back.<\/p>\n
I crouched beside him again, searching for words that a grieving five-year-old could hold onto. Then I pointed toward the airplane window. \u201cDo you see that cloud?\u201d I asked. \u201cThat\u2019s your mom waving at you. Every time you see a cloud, you can wave back, and she\u2019ll see you too.\u201d His eyes widened, and a small smile slowly appeared on his face.<\/p>\n
For the rest of the flight, he stared out the window, waving and softly saying, \u201cHi, Mom.\u201d By the time we landed, the fear was gone.
